Domestic valve quality needs to be improved

A worker in Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province, was recently injured while working on crystal parts processing when a valve connection ruptured, causing severe burns from the gas that escaped. This incident has raised concerns, as the county has seen two serious injuries in recent weeks due to the use of substandard pressure-reducing valves. In response, Zhejiang Province has initiated a province-wide campaign to eliminate unqualified pressure-reducing valves. So far, Pujiang County alone has confiscated 691 inferior valves. Industry insiders point out that although pressure-reducing valves may seem like small components, they reveal broader issues regarding the quality of domestically produced valves. Currently, China is home to around 6,000 valve manufacturing companies, with approximately 900 of them producing over 5 million yuan annually. According to data from the "Pump Town of China Pump Valves"—the Yongjia County Pump Valve Industry Association—only 300 types of valves with more than 3,000 specifications are produced in this region, and these are widely used in state-owned enterprises and key infrastructure projects. However, domestic valves still face challenges such as leakage, poor appearance, short lifespan, and unreliable operation. Some products are only comparable to international standards from the early 1980s. Experts predict that future market growth will be driven by sectors such as power generation, petrochemicals, fertilizers, and environmental protection. For valve manufacturers, those who can innovate, maintain high-quality standards, and develop new products will have the best chance to succeed in a competitive market. To improve valve quality, experts suggest focusing on production management, technological upgrades, and new product development. First, companies should align their production and technology management with international standards, invest in modern and automated equipment, and enhance product innovation. Additionally, strict control over raw material selection, casting, forging, and heat treatment processes is essential to ensure both internal and external quality meets global benchmarks. Second, there's a need to accelerate the development of high-tech valve products. During the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period, demand for advanced valves in petrochemical, oil and gas, and coal liquefaction projects is expected to rise significantly. This includes high-temperature valves, large-diameter high-pressure ball valves, and low-temperature valves for LNG pipelines. Finally, improving sealing technologies and enhancing the precision of critical components will help reduce leakage issues. By investing in better materials and processing techniques, the industry can address long-standing problems and ensure safer, more reliable valve performance.
