On the morning of February 26, in the director’s office of the Zhangqiu City Cookware Machinery Factory, Guo Chengtian, a farmer inventor with four patents, and Li Chuanguang, the factory director, signed a patent contract. The “Pujia†machine secured exclusive production rights in Shandong, with an annual patent implementation license fee of 15,000 yuan.
“This technology is mature, and the market potential is promising,†said a deputy director of the company. “It is estimated that the Shandong market can accommodate about 2,000 units, generating approximately 2 million yuan in profit. After successful commercialization, it could become a new growth driver for our factory.â€
Guo Chengtian, 40, hails from Guomao Village in Ningjiatun Town. After high school, he worked as a woodworker, lathe operator, technician, and workshop director at a village-run factory. While helping his relatives dig onions, he conceived the idea of creating a machine to replace manual labor. By the end of 2002, he successfully developed the digging machine. The following year, he applied for a national utility model patent. By late 2005, five prototypes were nearly complete.
After three years and over 10,000 yuan invested, he left his job at the factory to focus full-time on the digging machine. Despite support from the Zhangqiu Science and Technology Bureau, the Jinan Municipal Intellectual Property Office, and even a special meeting led by Deputy Mayor Liu Maojin, which resulted in a feature film broadcast on Zhangqiu TV, the transfer issue remained unresolved, leaving Guo frustrated.
At one point, numerous letters claiming to assist with the transfer arrived, but after sending out hundreds of yuan, there was no response. He then took the prototype to meet potential buyers, but those efforts also failed. Meanwhile, he had already obtained three other patents: “Hexagon Function Knife Rack Installed on Ordinary Lathe,†“Automatic Feeding Screen Sander,†and “Hand-held Corn Combine Harvester.â€
Despite setbacks, Guo remained determined, driven by his belief in the value of his inventions and the hope of bringing them to market. His journey reflects not only personal perseverance but also the challenges faced by independent inventors in turning ideas into real-world success.
