European flow balance valve to improve the heating system

Heating is essential for most urban residents in northern China. To support the sustainable development of the socialist market economy, accelerate energy conservation in buildings, and improve people's living standards, eight ministries and commissions, including the Ministry of Construction, issued the "Guidance on Pilot Reform of Urban Heating Systems" in July 2003. This marked the beginning of a comprehensive pilot program for heating system reforms across Chinese cities and towns. The reform primarily focuses on three key areas: restructuring the heating system, implementing heat billing systems, and reforming heating enterprises. These government-led initiatives are expected to drive rapid growth in the radiator industry. Among the important measures is the installation of radiator thermostatic valves, which play a crucial role in energy-saving, heat metering, and billing. A radiator temperature control valve is installed on the radiator and works by using a thermal element filled with temperature-sensitive materials. When the room temperature rises, the element expands, causing the valve to close and reduce hot water flow. Conversely, when the temperature drops, the valve opens again, allowing more hot water into the radiator. This mechanism helps maintain the desired indoor temperature. Users can also adjust the set temperature manually, enabling automatic regulation of the hot water supply. These valves come in two types: two-way and three-way, designed for two-pipe and single-pipe systems respectively. The two-way valve is used in two-pipe systems to address vertical imbalance caused by gravity, while the three-way valve helps manage flow distribution in single-pipe systems. In a two-pipe system, installing a thermostatic valve creates a variable flow system, which can significantly reduce power consumption—by up to 87.5% if the water volume is halved. However, in single-pipe systems, the use of a frequency converter is less effective. Previously, two-pipe systems were not widely promoted due to vertical hydraulic imbalances in tall buildings. But with the introduction of built-in preset devices, this issue has been largely resolved. Users can now set their preferred temperature and adjust it as needed, reducing unnecessary energy use and promoting energy-saving awareness. Despite these benefits, the full potential of thermostatic valves remains untapped due to the lack of an effective billing system. Without proper incentives, users often keep the valve at maximum settings, limiting energy savings. However, once a proper billing system is implemented, users will be more motivated to adjust temperatures based on actual needs. In Europe, temperature control devices have evolved beyond basic functions. They now focus on overall flow balance in heating systems, enhancing comfort while saving energy. Since the 1990s, flow balance valves have become standard, with Germany’s VarioQ technology leading the way. This advanced valve not only controls temperature but also measures and balances flow, improving system efficiency and reducing pump energy consumption. VarioQ valves are designed with precision, featuring special orifice meters and measuring instruments that allow for accurate flow adjustment. They help balance pressure, reduce noise, and detect system issues early. Additionally, they clean accumulated debris from the heating system, ensuring safe and efficient operation even in poor water conditions. With over 40 years of experience in energy-saving heating systems, Germany has achieved significant energy reductions—up to 30%—through the use of thermostatic valves. This not only improves energy efficiency but also raises public awareness about conservation. As environmental protection becomes a daily lifestyle, the vision of clear blue skies is no longer just a dream. With smart heating solutions like thermostatic valves, a greener future is within reach.
