Zhengzhou Nissan Punched Diesel Pickup Market

In October 2005, Zhengzhou Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. made a strong impact on the high-end diesel pickup market. Following this, the company launched the Ruiqi brand diesel pickup trucks and multi-functional commercial vehicles nationwide, offering an extensive range of models with comprehensive configurations never seen before. The NISSAN D22 pickup, often referred to as the "King of Pickups," has long been a symbol of Zhengzhou Nissan. For years, the company has consistently led in the high-end pickup segment. With the integration of the Dongfeng Group, Zhengzhou Nissan expanded its strategy by introducing a self-branded model under a dual-brand approach. This included a series of diesel pickups and multi-functional commercial vehicles, featuring both imported and locally assembled engines, available in standard and luxury versions, ensuring a well-structured product lineup with top-tier features. The newly launched diesel pickup models are equipped with Japan's original QD32T or locally assembled CYQD32T engines. These engines utilize advanced turbocharging technology, delivering strong performance, fuel efficiency, and environmental friendliness. The maximum power output is 110 horsepower, with a torque of 241Nm. Additionally, these vehicles come with ABS anti-lock braking systems, significantly upgrading the safety and equipment standards of domestic pickups. Earlier last year, Zhengzhou Nissan introduced a two-wheel-drive diesel pickup truck targeting the 80,000–100,000 yuan price range, which immediately stirred up the domestic diesel pickup market. Initially, they expected to fulfill orders within four months, but due to overwhelming demand, they had to accelerate production. This demonstrated that while they were not fully prepared, the launch of the Ruiqi series was well thought out and aimed at meeting diverse market needs. The Ruiqi diesel pickup is built on the high-end D22 platform, using original imported engines and produced alongside the D22. Its design draws inspiration from the D22’s streamlined body, featuring a fresh front grille and a rounded, robust bumper. The overall design is sleek and harmonious, reflecting modern aesthetics. The Ruiqi multifunctional commercial vehicle is a versatile model developed by Zhengzhou Nissan in collaboration with a renowned Italian design firm. It combines MPV, SUV, and light passenger functions, making it ideal for urban use. Equipped with either the imported QD32T or assembled CYQD32T engine, it offers superior performance with 110 horsepower and 241Nm of torque. Based on the D22 platform, it boasts a ground clearance of 210mm, an approach angle of 29°, and a departure angle of 23°, providing excellent off-road capabilities. Safety-wise, it features Nissan’s exclusive triple safety system, ensuring occupant protection. The vehicle also separates the front and rear compartments for better cargo management, with a 2-cubic-meter rear cargo space. Notably, this model participated in the 28th Dakar Rally as the only service vehicle for the Dongfeng-Zhengzhou Nissan Paladin Racing team, successfully completing the grueling 10,000-kilometer route across the Western Sahara. With the full lineup of diesel pickup models now on the market, Zhengzhou Nissan is clearly strengthening its dual-brand strategy, showing growing confidence in the domestic diesel pickup sector. Historically, Qingling, Jiangling, and Zhengzhou Nissan competed fiercely in the high-end pickup market. As competition intensified, Qingling and Jiangling shifted focus to the diesel segment, while JMC returned to the mid-range market. Zhengzhou Nissan, relying on the D22, continues to compete globally. Although it holds the top position, it still aims higher. This new series of diesel pickups, positioned in the premium segment, could redefine the market standards, setting a new benchmark for quality and performance. As General Manager Guo Zhenwei stated, “Because of concentration, so professional.” Will Zhengzhou Nissan’s entry bring about a shift in the diesel pickup market? Could it trigger a “catfish effect”?
