Vertical drilling system successfully applied in key exploration wells in northeastern Sichuan

Recently, the advanced vertical drilling technology developed by American Baker Hughes was successfully implemented in the Dawan 1 well, a key exploration well located in the northeastern Sichuan Basin. This breakthrough effectively addressed the challenge of maintaining wellbore stability in formations with steep dip angles, significantly improving drilling efficiency. The mechanical drilling rate increased by threefold compared to previous operations. Dawan 1 is the first major exploration well drilled on the Dawan structure by the company, with a planned total depth of 5,995 meters. During the initial drilling phase, from 1,704 to 1,794 meters, the well deviation angle increased sharply from 3 degrees to 45 degrees, making it difficult to maintain directional control. To address this issue and ensure accurate well placement, the Southern Company, with support from Sinopec Headquarters, decided to deploy Baker Hughes' vertical drilling system starting at 1,829.96 meters. By February 16, the well had reached a depth of 2,444 meters, with a total footage of 555.04 meters drilled using the new technology. The well inclination was reduced to just 0.3 degrees, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system. The average mechanical drilling speed during this interval reached 1.94 meters per hour, a significant improvement over previous rates. Currently, the well continues to be drilled deeper than 2,700 meters, and the results so far have exceeded expectations. This successful application of vertical drilling technology marks an important step forward in enhancing drilling performance in complex geological conditions, offering valuable insights for future exploration efforts in the region.
