After more than two years of dedicated effort by the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and CITIC Heavy Machinery Co., the main mechanical structure of the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) detector has been successfully developed. An appraisal and acceptance meeting was held today, where the expert committee, led by Academician Xu Jichu, former president of the Institute of Mechanical Science, confirmed that the project fully meets all technical requirements for the third-generation Beijing detector. The overall performance of the BESIII mechanical system is considered to be at an internationally advanced level, with its key technical parameters reaching world-class standards.
The Beijing Spectrometer III is a large-scale, multi-purpose detector operating on the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC). It plays a crucial role in detecting high-energy particle collisions, sampling signals, amplifying them, selecting triggers, and precisely measuring physical parameters. The main mechanical structure stands 9 meters tall, 11 meters long, and 6 meters wide, weighing a total of 650 tons. As one of the most complex engineering systems in the field of particle physics, the design, manufacturing, and assembly of this structure posed significant challenges.
According to project officials, the successful completion of the BESIII's main mechanical structure not only serves as a model for collaboration between research institutions and enterprises in developing major scientific equipment, but also marks a significant upgrade to the BEPC. This achievement represents a major milestone in China’s heavy machinery industry, showcasing its growing capability in producing highly precise and complex systems.
It is expected that the full construction of the Beijing Spectrometer III will be completed by March 2007, marking a new era in high-energy physics research in China.
