After more than two years of dedicated effort by the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and CITIC Heavy Machinery Co., the main mechanical structure of the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) detector has been successfully completed. A formal appraisal and acceptance meeting was held today, where the project was evaluated by an expert committee led by Academician Xu Jichu, a renowned scientist and former president of the Institute of Mechanical Science. The committee unanimously confirmed that the BESIII meets all the technical requirements set for China's third-generation particle detector and that its mechanical system demonstrates outstanding overall performance. The key technical specifications have reached world-class standards, marking a significant achievement in high-precision engineering.
The BESIII is a large-scale, multi-purpose detector operating at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC II). It plays a crucial role in detecting high-energy particle collisions, sampling signals, amplifying them, selecting triggers, and accurately measuring physical parameters. The main mechanical structure of the detector stands 9 meters tall, 11 meters long, and 6 meters wide, with a total weight of 650 tons. Given its complexity, the design, fabrication, and assembly of this system posed major engineering challenges. According to project officials, the successful completion of the main structure not only serves as a model for collaboration between research institutions and enterprises in developing advanced scientific equipment, but also represents a key renovation of the BEPC II facility.
This milestone highlights China’s growing capabilities in heavy machinery manufacturing, particularly in handling high-precision and complex systems. With the main structure now complete, the project is on track for full assembly and testing. It is expected that the BESIII will be fully constructed by March 2007, marking a new era in particle physics research in China and reinforcing the country’s position in cutting-edge scientific infrastructure.
