The *Trib Local* recently published an article discussing the impact of budget cuts on the Lake Zurich Fire Department. Following the announcement of layoffs and reductions in the village’s fire, police, and public works departments, concerns have been raised about the potential effects on public safety. Specifically, a 30% reduction in fire inspections has sparked worry among residents and local officials.
According to the proposed budget, 11 positions will be eliminated, with five employees being laid off. The fire prevention bureau will see its staff reduced from four to two, leading to fewer inspections. Fire Chief David Wheelock explained that this cut could significantly affect the department's ability to prevent fires.
Trustee Terry Mastandrea, who once served as the fire chief for over two decades before retiring in 2011, expressed concern over the decision. He emphasized that reducing inspections could pose a risk to the community. “We don’t have enough people or resources to respond to fires, so the best way is to prevent them,†he said. “Why are we taking a step backward when we need to be concerned about public safety?â€
In addition to eliminating two fire inspector positions, one role will be reclassified as a “fire prevention specialist.†This change is expected to save the department nearly $135,000 annually. The new specialist will work alongside the deputy fire marshal and take on additional responsibilities.
To offset some of the loss in inspection capacity, the fire department plans to introduce a self-inspection program for low-risk buildings. Business owners would complete a checklist and report back to the fire prevention bureau. Chief Wheelock hopes to implement this program this year, targeting small businesses like offices and local shops that don't have high foot traffic.
However, Mastandrea criticized the plan, arguing that there’s no real incentive for business owners to report violations. “We haven’t had a fire loss in years because of our strong fire prevention efforts and thorough inspections,†he said. “The only way to ensure buildings are safe is to actually inspect them.â€
Wheelock clarified that businesses will receive one warning before facing charges for violations. He also noted that even low-risk buildings will be inspected at least once every other year. Additionally, the department earns approximately $32,000 annually by conducting inspections for neighboring towns like Deer Park and Kildeer. However, the reduction in inspections will only apply within Lake Zurich, where businesses are not charged for such services.
