Chicago FD involved in 2 crashes

There have been two recent incidents involving Chicago Fire Department (CFD) equipment. These events highlight the dangers that emergency responders face while on duty. The **first** incident occurred on Friday when a spare ambulance collided with a school bus in the Hanson Park neighborhood. According to the Chicago Tribune, the ambulance was en route to an emergency call when it crashed into the school bus at around 9:20 a.m. at the intersection of Grand and Central Avenues on the Northwest Side. The ambulance had its emergency lights and siren activated, as confirmed by CFD Chief Joseph Roccasalva. The school bus driver was the only person aboard and refused medical attention at the scene. Two paramedics were injured but in stable condition. They were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Resurrection Hospital respectively, with non-life-threatening injuries. The **second** incident took place this morning when Truck 19, responding to a fire alarm in a high-rise building, was struck by a car at the intersection of Washington and Des Plaines. It is believed the car’s driver failed to yield to the emergency vehicle, resulting in a collision on the officer’s side of the truck. The car’s driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation, while no firefighters were injured. Although Truck 19 was able to leave the scene, two critical compartments—housing hydraulic spreaders and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) gear—were damaged and could not be accessed. This damage may affect the truck's ability to respond effectively to future emergencies. Photos from the scene show the extent of the impact. One image captures the brand new Ford Taurus that struck the truck, while another highlights the damaged compartments. These images serve as a reminder of the risks that come with emergency response work. As the city continues to deal with these incidents, officials are likely reviewing procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
