It was with deep sorrow that we learned of the passing of Firefighter/Paramedic Kevin Hauber, a 23-year veteran of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. After a long battle with colon cancer, Kevin passed away on January 27, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones, including his wife and four young daughters. He will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, and the entire Buffalo Grove community.
Kevin was more than just a firefighter—he was a dedicated public servant who gave his life to protecting others. He joined the department in 1994 and remained committed to his duty even as he faced his illness. His passion for the job came from his childhood dreams, inspired by the classic show *Emergency!*, which portrayed the heroic work of firefighters and paramedics. In 2014, during his chemotherapy treatments, he had the opportunity to meet one of the show’s stars, Randy Mantooth, and shared how the show shaped his career. Mantooth signed a photo of Kevin and his twin brother, Jim, who is also a firefighter, an experience that meant a lot to him.
In addition to his role at the fire department, Kevin was a proud member of the Associated Firefighters of Illinois (AFFI) Honor Guard, where he served with honor and respect. He was known for his kindness, positivity, and unwavering dedication. In 2018, he was honored with the Donald J. Bower Commitment to Excellence Award for his outstanding service to the Honor Guard.
His funeral took place on February 2, 2018, at St. Mary’s Church in Buffalo Grove. A wake was held the day before at Glueckert Funeral Home. The community gathered to pay their respects, showing the deep impact he had on those around him. As Fire Chief Mike Baker said, "Kevin was a caring, loving person who was always happy and never had anything bad to say about anyone, even when he was sick."
We extend our deepest condolences to the Hauber family. May they find comfort in the love and memories of a man who lived his life with courage, compassion, and purpose.
