2-Alarm fire in Barrington Hills, 5-3-18

A large house in Barrington Hills was engulfed in flames early Thursday morning, May 3, 2018, after a lightning strike sparked what became a devastating fire. The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) responded to the emergency at 83 Paganica Drive around 4:40 a.m., when the homeowner spotted smoke and flames. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire coming from the second floor and the mansard roof. The resident had already evacuated the home. The area lacks fire hydrants, so crews initiated a drafting operation using three portable water tanks. A first engine and tanker arrived with 4,000 gallons of water, while a second engine laid a line to the end of the street. Over 14 tankers shuttled water for more than two hours, supplying several hand lines that fought the blaze. Despite the challenging conditions, the fire department maintained a steady water supply throughout the operation. The house, which was nearly 9,000 square feet, sustained significant damage, particularly to the roof, and was left uninhabitable. Neighbors reported hearing a loud boom during the night before the fire was discovered. According to a report from DailyHerald.com, the fire may have been caused by lightning, following severe storms that swept through the region earlier that day. The fire required the coordination of about 20 fire departments, highlighting the severity of the situation. While the cause is still under investigation, officials believe the lightning strike was the likely source. No injuries were reported, but the community was left shaken by the destruction of a prominent home in the area.
