A large barn, which had stood for over 150 years, was completely consumed by fire around 3 p.m. on Monday in Leaf River. The incident occurred on the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, where the structure had been used to store hay, feed, and farming equipment. Built in 1844, the barn had been a family property for generations, owned by Nancy Stukenberg’s family. Fortunately, her three horses were not inside at the time and were safe in a nearby feedlot. "Everything else can be replaced," she said.
Despite high winds, icy conditions, and deep slush from a recent winter storm, firefighters from 10 local departments worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. They managed to save nearby buildings, including two homes. No injuries to people or animals were reported, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday, according to Fire Chief Steve Shelton.
Mutual aid efforts included units from Byron, Win-Ber-Sew RIT, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo. The response featured engines, trucks, ambulances, tenders, and chiefs from various areas, highlighting the coordinated effort to tackle the growing fire.
The fire serves as a stark reminder of how quickly nature and accidents can change the landscape of a community. While the barn is lost, the resilience of the local firefighters and the determination of the community offer hope for recovery and rebuilding. As investigations continue, residents remain hopeful that the cause will be determined soon, bringing some closure to this tragic event.
