3-Alarm fire in Leaf River

A 150-year-old barn was completely consumed by flames around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015, in Leaf River. The fire, which broke out at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, destroyed a historic structure that had been part of the Stukenberg family's property for generations. The barn, built in 1844, stored hay, feed, and equipment. Fortunately, Nancy Stukenberg’s three horses were safely kept in a nearby feedlot at the time and were unharmed. Despite high winds, slippery roads, and deep slush from a recent winter storm, firefighters from ten different departments worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading to surrounding buildings. They successfully saved two nearby homes, and no injuries—human or animal—were reported. At the time of the report, the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, according to Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton. The response to the fire included significant mutual aid efforts. Units from Byron, Win–Ber–Sew RIT, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo joined the effort. Fire engines, trucks, ambulances, and command units were all mobilized to tackle the blaze. Among those involved was the Rock Engine, operated by Lynn Scott, as part of the coordinated response. Local media outlets like Saukvalley.com and radioman911.com provided detailed coverage of the event, highlighting both the destruction and the heroic efforts of first responders. While the barn is now gone, the community remains focused on recovery and supporting the affected families. As one resident put it, “Everything else can be replaced,” emphasizing the resilience of the local community in the face of adversity.
