Excerpts from DNAinfo.com:
On the same day the Chicago Bears claimed victory in Super Bowl XX, the city of Chicago mourned the loss of Chicago Fire Lt. Edmond Coglianese.
Coglianese, 42, a devoted father from Mount Greenwood, died while battling a fire at the Mark Twain Hotel. He rescued two elderly residents on the third floor before re-entering the five-story building to search for more survivors, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Tragically, he became trapped by the flames and succumbed to smoke inhalation on January 26, 1986. A 12-year veteran of the department, his bravery left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
A total of 35 senior citizens were safely evacuated using ladders, while another 100 people escaped through the stairwells, according to a fire department report. The incident highlighted both the danger and the heroism involved in emergency response.
A solemn bell-ringing ceremony was held at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Engine Co. 98, where Coglianese had served. His wife, Eileen, and their two children, Allyson and Matt, were left behind, grieving the loss of a dedicated firefighter and loving family man.
Eileen Coglianese is the president of the Gold Badge Society, an organization that supports families who have lost a firefighter or paramedic in the line of duty. Their mission includes providing emotional support, helping with funeral arrangements, and managing media inquiries—offering comfort during one of the most difficult times a family can face.
The society’s work is rooted in shared experiences, ensuring that no family feels alone in their grief. Through their efforts, they help ease the emotional burden and provide practical assistance during such a tragic time.
