CFD LODD anniversary – Firefighter Ed Coglianese

On the very day the Chicago Bears claimed victory in Super Bowl XX, the city of Chicago mourned the loss of Chicago Fire Lt. Edmond Coglianese.

Coglianese, 42, a devoted father from Mount Greenwood, died while battling a fire at the Mark Twain Hotel on January 26, 1986. He had just saved two elderly residents trapped on the third floor when he returned into the five-story building to search for more survivors. Unfortunately, he was overcome by flames and succumbed to smoke inhalation that day.

The fire resulted in the rescue of 35 senior citizens using ladders, while another 100 people escaped through the stairwells, according to a fire department report. His bravery and selflessness during the crisis left a lasting impact on the community.

A bell-ringing ceremony was held on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Engine Co. 98, where Coglianese had served. The event honored his memory and recognized his service. He is survived by his wife, Eileen, and their two children, Allyson and Matt.

Eileen Coglianese, now president of the Gold Badge Society, plays a vital role in supporting families who have lost firefighters or paramedics in the line of duty. The group offers emotional support, helps with funeral arrangements, and assists with media inquiries and other logistical challenges following such tragedies.

Through shared experiences and compassion, the Gold Badge Society provides comfort to those who are grieving, helping them navigate the difficult days ahead.
