Barrington FD & Fire Protection District update

The *Daily Herald* recently published an article detailing the upcoming separation between the Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which will officially take effect on January 1st. As part of the transition, both departments have completed the final major step—dividing their shared assets, including vehicles and equipment. Both organizations expressed satisfaction with the process, indicating that the division was handled in a fair and cooperative manner. Meanwhile, the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District, which covers 48 square miles just outside of Barrington, has learned that 16 out of the 19 laid-off firefighters from the Barrington Fire Department who were offered jobs have already applied. The fire district is offering these firefighters their current union wages and vacation benefits, though they are not extending pension coverage. According to officials, retaining experienced firefighters with strong institutional knowledge of the area is a top priority for the new fire district. The remaining 33 full-time firefighters will be staffed by Paramedic Services of Illinois, a private contractor. Fire District Administrator Rowan said he believes the community will be pleased with the transition. “We have the equipment we need and the personnel we need,” he stated. The formal end of the long-standing service contract between the village and the fire district will occur on January 1st at 8 a.m., marking the official start of the two separate entities. Equipment will be relocated to the village’s fire station and the two stations in Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington approximately one to two weeks before the split. This development marks a significant change in how emergency services will be delivered in the area.
