This morning, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department celebrated a piece of tradition often associated with East Coast volunteer fire companies right here in the Chicago area. They held a wet-down ceremony to officially welcome two new additions to their fleet: a Ferrara engine and a Ferrara tower ladder. These state-of-the-art vehicles are now part of their firefighting arsenal, set to enhance the department’s capabilities.
The event drew a crowd of current and former Buffalo Grove firefighters, village officials, and other honored guests. Chief Vavra gave a short but heartfelt speech, setting the tone for the day. Following his remarks, the highlight of the ceremony took place—a symbolic hosing down of the new rigs. This act, steeped in tradition, marked the transition of these vehicles into active service. Afterward, guests and firefighters worked together to dry off the trucks before giving them a ceremonial “push†into Station 26. Both vehicles are expected to be fully operational within the next six weeks. The engine will be stationed at Station 27, while the tower ladder will likely serve out of Station 26. With this change, the KME 75′ Quint currently at Station 27 will move to Station 25.
In making room for these new arrivals, the department is retiring older equipment, including a 1991 E-ONE 75′ Hush Quint and a 1989 Seagrave engine.
The photos from the event capture the excitement and camaraderie among those present. One image shows a firefighter giving the new tower ladder a thorough “wetting down,†a ritual that symbolizes the vehicle’s integration into the team. Another shot highlights the collaborative effort as personnel and guests wiped down the rig, ensuring it was ready for its grand entrance. A third photo captures the moment when firefighters and friends came together to ceremonially push the tower ladder into Station 26 for the very first time. The newly raised apparatus bay door at Station 26 provides ample space for the towering vehicle. Meanwhile, another image documents the arrival of Engine 217, soon to be stationed at the north end of town at Station 27, marking yet another milestone for the department.
These images and the ceremony itself reflect the strong sense of community and pride within the Buffalo Grove Fire Department. It’s not just about acquiring new equipment; it’s about preserving traditions and building a legacy for future generations of firefighters.
