This is the first in a series of updates covering the confined space recovery operation that took place on Thursday at an industrial accident site at Sunnyside Corporation, where a worker was overcome by methylene chloride fumes inside an outside storage tank. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present for much of the operation, capturing key moments as emergency crews worked to retrieve the victim.
Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the initial Wheeling fire companies and documented the early stages of the operation. It was determined that the effort would be a recovery rather than a rescue, as the worker had already been found unresponsive.
The following images show the scene as it unfolded. The first photo shows a Wheeling lieutenant donning his self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while preparing to enter the tank. Another image captures workers standing nearby, waiting anxiously for news about their colleague trapped inside. A firefighter is seen securing a smoke ejector to a rope, ready to hoist it to the top of the tank. Another shot shows a firefighter setting up a fan above the tank opening, part of the ventilation efforts to clear toxic fumes. The fan was later hoisted into place, and a tower ladder was positioned as an anchor point for the recovery operation.
A technical rescue box alarm was activated, and on-scene units began preparations before additional personnel and equipment arrived. The operation required careful coordination due to the hazardous environment, with safety and procedure taking priority throughout.
As the recovery continued, the focus remained on retrieving the worker safely and ensuring no further risks were posed to responders. This is the first of several updates as the situation develops.
