Around 7 PM on Monday evening, the Highland Park Fire Department received an urgent call about a fire in the attic of a large, three-story brick house located in the 1400 block of Sheridan Road. Upon arrival, the responding officers observed significant flames erupting through the roof of the residence. The initial alarm was quickly escalated to a working fire response, prompting mutual aid from neighboring towns including Glencoe, Deerfield, and Highwood.
The first firefighting units that arrived initiated an aggressive attack strategy but encountered challenges accessing the attic space due to its complex layout. Complications further arose from the building's multi-level roof design, which complicated efforts to control the blaze. As the fire intensified, the alarm was upgraded to a second alarm status, drawing additional resources from nearby communities such as Northbrook, Winnetka, Lake Bluff, and Knollwood. Fire trucks from Northfield and Wheeling also joined the effort, while Wilmette dispatched a squad unit. Ambulance services were provided by Highland Park, Highwood, Prospect Heights, and Libertyville.
Despite the coordinated efforts, the fire managed to spread primarily to the upper floors, although water and smoke infiltrated the entire structure. Northfield’s ladder truck was positioned as a precautionary measure but remained unused during the operation.
Photographers Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present at the scene, capturing several vivid images of the incident. Tim’s collection of photos can be viewed here, while Larry’s gallery is available here. Their documentation provides a comprehensive view of the intense firefighting operations that unfolded that evening.
