Buffalo Grove to Sponsor Breast Cancer Awareness Tour

The article below from today’s Daily Herald highlights the remarkable efforts of Buffalo Grove firefighter Steve Rusin and the entire department as they rally behind the cause of promoting breast cancer awareness through their collaboration with the Pink Heals Tour. However, in Buffalo Grove, pink takes center stage. This shift is a testament to the department's dedication to raising awareness about cancer in women. Throughout September and October, Buffalo Grove firefighters, along with other village employees and officials, will don pink shirts adorned with the Pink Heals Tour logo. These shirts symbolize their commitment to spreading awareness about cancer prevention and support for survivors. The Pink Heals Tour uses a fleet of pink fire trucks to traverse the nation, carrying messages of hope and resilience. This year, Steve Rusin, a Buffalo Grove Firefighter/Paramedic, will be one of the drivers leading the Pink Heals convoy. The 2010 iteration of the tour begins on August 18 and wraps up on October 31. Key stops include the Fire Chiefs Conference in Chicago from August 27 to 29, where the trucks will be showcased. Additionally, residents and visitors can catch a glimpse of four pink trucks near the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Raupp Boulevard on September 1, just before the annual Buffalo Grove Days charity softball game. The Pink Heals Tour originated with Dave Graybill, an Arizona firefighter who began his journey in Glendale, Arizona, using a single pink fire truck. Over time, his efforts have grown, and the truck now carries over 38,000 signatures from cancer survivors and their loved ones. Last year, Steve Rusin initiated a fundraising campaign within the Buffalo Grove Fire Department to sell 30 T-shirts. To his surprise, the department surpassed his expectations by raising $2,500 through the sale of more than 400 shirts. All proceeds were donated to the Wellness Place in Palatine, a local cancer support center. This year, Rusin continues his mission by selling these shirts, which will soon be available on the village’s official website. He has also introduced hooded sweatshirts to expand the merchandise options. Additionally, Buffalo Grove Firefighter Frank Doll has created a locally-inspired design featuring the village logo. Rusin expressed pride in how the fire service community has embraced the pink T-shirt initiative. “It’s amazing to see how the fire department, often seen as a traditionally ‘tough’ environment, has fully embraced this cause. It shows the human side of firefighting.” At this week’s village board meeting, Fire Chief Terry Vavra commended Rusin for his unwavering dedication and recognized the sacrifices made by Rusin’s family. “Everyone in his family has supported him so much that they’ve willingly given up their father and husband for a week as he drives one of the trucks through the southern states.” --- In my opinion, this initiative not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community and solidarity. It’s inspiring to see such a strong commitment to helping others, especially during a challenging time like cancer diagnosis and treatment.
