Worker dies in chemical tank in Wheeling – update 1

This is the first in a series of updates covering the confined space recovery operation that took place on Thursday at the Sunnyside Corporation industrial site, where a worker was overcome by methylene chloride fumes inside an outside storage tank. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were present for much of the incident. Larry Shapiro arrived shortly after the first Wheeling fire units and captured the early stages of the operation, which quickly shifted from a potential rescue to a recovery effort. The decision was made based on the severity of the conditions and the need to safely retrieve the victim. A technical rescue box alarm was activated, and on-scene units began preliminary preparations before additional specialists, equipment, and supplies arrived. The operation required careful coordination due to the hazardous environment, with firefighters working to ventilate the tank and secure access points. As the day progressed, the focus remained on safely retrieving the victim and ensuring the safety of all involved.
