As I was scrolling through some local updates, I came across some interesting information about the Lake Forest Fire Department. Their two stations are now listed on the site, which is quite handy for anyone looking to get familiar with their setup. The primary station located at 255 W. Deerpath Road is absolutely packed with gear, featuring everything from a buggy and two engines to three ambulances, a tower ladder, squad vehicle, utility truck, boat, and even an ATV. All but one of the ambulances have been documented so far.
One of the most noticeable changes over the years has been the evolution of their apparatus colors. Until 1991, all their vehicles were painted entirely red. However, that changed when they acquired four Pierce units that came with a white roof. Fast forward to 2007, and they were still sticking to the classic white-over-red color scheme when they got Engine 422, a Pierce Dash rescue pumper. Interestingly enough, in 2008, they added an IHC/Horton ambulance that was painted black over red. Additionally, the 1994 Pierce Saber underwent some bodywork at Renewed Performance, Inc. (RPI) in Tipton, Indiana, and now it too sports the black-over-red color combination.
Moving on to Station 2, which is situated on the west side of town, it originally occupied an old converted Everett School House on Everett Road near Waukegan Road (Route 43). Over time, as the city expanded and the area underwent redevelopment, the schoolhouse made way for a brand-new facility in 1993. This modern firehouse boasts three drive-through bays, office space for the Fire Prevention Bureau, and even classroom facilities. Interestingly, the new station was constructed just a short walk from where the old one stood.
Station 2, located at 1111 S. Telegraph Road, is not only larger but also retains a certain charm with its second-floor dormers. Although these dormers might look functional from the outside, they are purely decorative—there’s actually no second floor inside. A photograph by Larry Shapiro captures this unique architectural feature perfectly.
These updates highlight how the Lake Forest Fire Department continues to grow and adapt alongside the community it serves. It’s always fascinating to see how emergency services evolve while maintaining their core mission of safety and preparedness.
