Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
As the walls and ceilings are being stripped away from the historic Cicero Fire House No. 2 building on Lake Street, a piece of Oak Park's past is being uncovered—and it’s bringing back memories for Frank Lipo. The old firehouse, located at 129 Lake St. and built in 1898, has stood as the town's oldest public building for over a century. Now, after years of use in various roles, it will soon become the new home of the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest once the renovation is complete.
Frank Lipo, the executive director of the society, is leading the $600,000 restoration project, which aims to bring the building back to its original grandeur while adding modern comforts. “We want to restore the front doors to match the historical photos,†he explained. “Right now, they’re covered with cinder blocks and windows. We also plan to build a brick plaza out front, just like where the fire engines used to pull up.â€
In June, crews will begin digging three deep wells near the building to install a geothermal heating and cooling system. Lipo hopes this eco-friendly upgrade will help preserve the collection of historical artifacts housed within the building.
During the demolition phase, workers stumbled upon some fascinating relics from the past. When the second-floor ceiling was removed, two large holes were revealed—evidence of the old sliding poles that firefighters would use to descend quickly to the ground floor. In the rear of the building, beneath the second floor, they found preserved horse feed, hinting at the time when horses were kept on the first floor and brought to the front to pull early fire wagons.
While the society is excited about preserving history, it’s also looking for community support to finish the job. Recently, two grants from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources totaling nearly $200,000 were temporarily suspended but not canceled. While the group waits for the funds to be released, it has launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to raise additional money.
