The Barrington Fire Department responded to a barn fire on Ridge Road in Barrington Hills this morning, just as the shift was changing. The call came in for a structure fire at 21089 Ridge Road. Upon arrival, the first units noticed light smoke visible from the road and proceeded down the private drive with Quint 362, Tanker 362, and Engine 363. Engine 361 laid 1,000 feet of large diameter hose back to the street, where two 3,000-gallon portable water tanks were set up to supply water. This area lacks fire hydrants, so the department relied on these portable tanks for their initial attack.

The three units on scene provided a total of 3,500 gallons of water, with an additional 960 gallons from Engine 1 before the tanker shuttle was established. A MABAS Box Alarm was immediately requested, and within minutes, it was upgraded to a second alarm. Units from Long Grove, Palatine Rural, Round Lake, Wauconda, Cary, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods were en route, along with trucks from Palatine, Elgin, and Mundelein, ambulances from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Deerfield, and engines from Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich, Carpentersville, West Dundee, and Hoffman Estates.

The burning structure included a barn and garages filled with hay, a boat, a forklift, and various mechanical equipment. Several horses were safely moved to a nearby pasture by firefighters. As the fire continued to grow, the alarm was upgraded to a fourth alarm specifically for tankers, bringing in additional resources from Fox Lake, Prospect Heights, Bartlett, Nunda Rural, and Crystal Lake. Tim Olk arrived shortly after the initial alarm was called, and Larry Shapiro followed about 30 minutes later. Both captured images and video that will be posted once available. One firefighter sustained an ankle injury and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. This was a significant response involving multiple departments and a large number of units. The situation remains under control, and crews are working to fully extinguish the fire and secure the area.
