Buffalo Grove Firefighters Embrace Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness
When people think of fire departments, red is usually the first color that comes to mind. But in Buffalo Grove, pink has taken center stage. This shift didn’t happen overnight—it’s a reflection of the department's dedication to raising awareness about women’s cancers.
For the months of September and October, firefighters, along with other village employees, will don pink shirts adorned with the Pink Heals Tour logo. These shirts are more than just apparel; they represent a nationwide movement aimed at sparking conversations about health and wellness. This year, Steve Rusin, a Buffalo Grove firefighter and paramedic, will be one of the drivers leading the Pink Heals Tour across the southern United States.
The 2010 iteration of the Pink Heals Tour starts on August 18 and concludes on October 31. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the pink fire trucks at the Fire Chiefs Conference in Chicago from August 27 to 29. On September 1, just before the annual Buffalo Grove Days charity softball game, the trucks will be parked near the intersection of Lake-Cook Road and Raupp Boulevard for public viewing.
It all began with Dave Graybill, an Arizona firefighter who initially drove a single pink fire truck across the country to raise awareness. Over time, the truck collected over 38,000 signatures from survivors and their loved ones. Last year, Buffalo Grove firefighters joined forces to sell T-shirts, far exceeding expectations by raising $2,500 after selling over 400 pieces. Rusin ensured the funds went directly to The Wellness Place in Palatine, a vital resource for cancer patients.
This year, Rusin is back at it, selling both T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the Pink Heals Tour logo. A local version of the shirt has been created by firefighter Frank Doll, incorporating the Buffalo Grove emblem. “The fire service has really embraced the pink T-shirt idea,†Rusin noted. “It shows that even the toughest guys can stand for something meaningful.â€
At the recent village board meeting, Fire Chief Terry Vavra expressed his admiration for Rusin’s work and acknowledged the sacrifices made by his family. “Everyone in his family has supported him wholeheartedly,†Vavra said. “They’re letting him take this journey knowing they’ll miss him for a week as he travels through the South.â€
As the Pink Heals Tour rolls into town, it’s clear that the Buffalo Grove Fire Department isn’t just about fighting fires—they’re also champions in the battle against cancer.
