I just heard from a friend about a terrible incident involving someone I’ve always admired—Ken Soderbeck, a renowned fire historian, antique restorer, and active member of SPAAMFAA. He owns Hand in Hand Restoration in Jackson, Michigan, and unfortunately, he recently suffered a massive fire at his workshop last week. It's heart-wrenching to hear how much he lost, especially since it's a place that has been such a significant part of his life for so long.
Thankfully, some of the most important items he was working on—five major pieces—were salvaged. Two steamers, two hand carts, and an American LaFrance Roadster all survived, though a couple sustained only minor damage. However, much of Ken’s personal collection was completely destroyed. This includes cherished items like helmets, buckets, bugles, countless photos and negatives, silk screens, and historical records that documented the rich history of American LaFrance.
It’s inspiring to see how the community has rallied around him since the fire. People have been reaching out from all over to offer support, and I’m sure this outpouring of kindness will continue as friends and colleagues visit Jackson to lend a hand in any way they can.
I actually went down there on Sunday to help out. I spent a few hours polishing the chrome and brass on one of the steamers, as well as some smaller parts. Even with the limited restoration work I could do, it felt good to contribute. Still, the overall impact of the fire—both financially and emotionally—is incredibly overwhelming.
If anyone wants to pitch in and support Ken and his wife Aggie during this tough time, there’s a fundraising effort underway. You can click [here](#) to learn more about the fund and read a brief summary of what they’re hoping to achieve. For those planning to attend the annual fire flea market in Jackson next month, you’ll know how central Ken’s shop was to the local fire history scene.
