House fire in Sycamore, 4-4-19

This is from Art Zern:

Responded at 21:56 for a structure fire. When the first units arrived, the building was fully involved. Engine 2 found heavy fire on three sides, with the "B" exposure starting to catch. They called for a defensive operation and immediately began using their deck gun and a 2.5-inch hand line to attack the B-side exposure. Engine 1 arrived next and pulled a skid line to the D-side. A quick knockdown was achieved using the DeKalb T-1 due to structural concerns. The fire on the B-side was fueled by natural gas until Nicor arrived to locate and shut off the supply. It was a general alarm with assistance from Cortland and GK engines, Hampshire Truck, and COQ companies. A couple of people were checked for smoke inhalation, but no injuries to firefighters were reported.

From the Sycamore Fire Department Facebook page:

Last night into early this morning, the fire department responded to a reported structure fire on the 1300 block of Janet Street. First responders found heavy fire engulfing most of the building and initiated a defensive attack using a master stream device with water from the engine’s tank. The majority of the fire was brought under control within about an hour. A natural gas-fed fire at the meter was contained by crews until a NICOR team arrived to shut off the fuel supply. Firefighters stayed on scene for another two hours conducting overhaul operations.

A great job by the initial responding units to quickly bring down what was an overwhelming fire, along with excellent support from our mutual aid partners. There were no injuries to firefighters or residents. Two individuals were evaluated by paramedics on scene and declined further treatment. Initial damage estimates at 1319 Janet Street are around $300,000 for the structure and contents. Heat from the fire also damaged a neighboring home at 1311 Janet Street, with estimated damages of $50,000.

The fire escalated to a general alarm, and help came from several nearby departments including DeKalb, Elburn, Genoa, Hampshire, Burlington, Cortland, Pingree Grove, and others. Sycamore Police and Public Works also assisted, along with Nicor and ComEd. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and remains undetermined at this time.

Photos from the Sycamore FD Facebook page show the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the crews on the scene. The images capture the full extent of the damage, as well as the work being done by utility crews to secure the gas lines. Firefighters can be seen working closely with emergency responders, highlighting the coordinated effort that went into containing the blaze. The community has expressed gratitude for the quick response and the professionalism shown by all involved in the incident.
