An extra-alarm fire broke out early this morning in a vacant building on the Southeast Side of Chicago and quickly spread to three other structures, forcing 20 people—including six children—out of their homes, according to officials.

A firefighter was hospitalized after sustaining a knee injury while battling the flames at the 8800 block of South Escanaba Avenue. Additionally, a local resident was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital due to an asthma attack caused by smoke exposure, officials reported.

Firefighters arrived at the scene around 4:20 a.m. and found a two-story frame building fully engulfed in flames, said Meg Ahlheim, a spokesperson for the Chicago Fire Department. As the fire spread to three neighboring buildings—one vacant and two occupied—extra alarms were called, bringing over 100 firefighters and paramedics to the location.

The blaze was brought under control by approximately 6 a.m., though the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Residents in the area are being provided temporary shelter as investigators determine the cause of the fire.
