An extra-alarm fire broke out this morning in a vacant building on the Southeast Side of Chicago and quickly spread to three other structures, forcing 20 people from their homes, including six children. Officials confirmed the incident occurred around 4:20 a.m. at the 8800 block of South Escanaba Avenue.

A firefighter was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital after suffering a knee injury while battling the flames. A local resident also required medical attention due to an asthma attack triggered by smoke exposure, according to authorities.

The Chicago Fire Department received the initial call about the blaze and arrived to find a two-story frame building fully engulfed in flames. As the fire spread to neighboring buildings — one vacant and two occupied — an extra-alarm was activated, bringing over 100 firefighters and paramedics to the scene.

Firefighters worked through the early hours of the morning and managed to bring the fire under control by approximately 6 a.m. No fatalities were reported, but several residents are still without shelter as investigators determine the cause of the fire.
