2010 President’s Green Chemistry Challenge Award Released

Liao Junzhi, a Chinese-American professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, won the Personal Highest Honorary Scholarship award for his research achievement “CO2 recycling in biosynthesis”. Biotechnology company LS9, located in South San Francisco, USA, won the Small Business Award for its production of renewable petrochemical fuels and microbial-based chemicals. The company's technology is the use of a series of genetically modified microorganisms to convert plant sugars into various paraffins, olefins, fatty alcohols and fatty esters.

Dow Chemical and BASF received the Green Synthetic Route award for their jointly developed HPPO technology, an environmentally friendly and innovative process for producing propylene oxide using hydrogen peroxide. Compared with the traditional production method of propylene oxide, this technology can significantly reduce the generation of waste water, and the energy consumption is lower, and the construction investment of the device is also less.

In addition, Merck and Cadicas received Green Response Condition Awards for the development of a process for the manufacture of Type II diabetes drugs using new transaminases; Clarke, which is engaged in environmental products and services, has included the Green Chemical Design Award in its capsule. The company developed green insecticides that use spinosad to control the growth of mosquito larvae.

The President’s Green Chemistry Challenge Award has spanned the fifteenth year. The award aims to reward those who implement the principles and concepts of green chemistry and engineering into product design, production, and chemical applications to achieve pollution prevention and control goals and promote Sustainable development of chemical research and emerging technologies is the first time in the world that a government of the country has implemented a green chemistry incentive policy.
