Ship cleaning has a "cleaner"

Harbin Engineering University has developed the first underwater hull cleaning and inspection robot that can bathe large ships. Recently, it passed the expert appraisal organized by the Science and Technology Department of Heilongjiang Province in Harbin.

The robot realizes water, underwater crawling and hull cleaning operations under the control of the remote control device. It can adapt to the working environment of 20 meters underwater, and carry three sets of brushes at the same time. According to the high, medium and low speeds, it can flexibly and stably advance, retreat, turn left and turn right, while cleaning and integrating underwater. The camera system and underwater hull detection equipment can inspect and inspect the surface of the underwater hull. Experts believe that the comprehensive technical indicators of robots have reached the international advanced level.

The project leader, the vice president of the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of Harbin Engineering University, and the director of the Heilongjiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Underwater Operation Technology and Equipment, Professor Wang Liquan, said that during the long-term transportation of ships, shellfish, scales and skin will adhere to the surface of the underwater hull. Rust spots have seriously affected the speed and service life of the ship and also increased fuel consumption. At present, foreign underwater hull cleaning is still a diver for cleaning, and automatic cleaning is under development. Wang Liquan and Professor Meng Qingxin and Prof. Yuan Ficai led the research team to conduct pioneering research on the automation of underwater cleaning operations of ships since 2003, and were listed as the key research projects of the provincial “10th Five-Year Plan”.

The research team lasted for three years and successfully solved the three key technologies of underwater robots' adsorption, movement and performance in water. Performance tests show that the robot underwater cleaning operation saves labor, reduces the labor intensity of divers, and improves the efficiency of ship repair. At the same time, it can be directly carried out when the ship is anchored or docked. On the one hand, the ship's suspension loss is reduced, on the other hand, the ship's fuel consumption is greatly reduced, the economic benefit is improved, and the problem of insufficient shipyard is alleviated. The underwater cleaning of robots can save 6% of fuel. The annual net income will reach 200 million yuan for ocean and coastal vessels with a fuel consumption of more than 10 million tons per year.
