On August 26, 2008, Michelin China Investment Co., Ltd. delivered the XZA2+ Energy green energy-saving tire to its customer, Beijing Xianglong Alsek Co., Ltd. in Beijing. This event marked the beginning of Michelin’s truck tire sales in the Chinese market, which had started back in 2006. Since the introduction of the green tires, over 100,000 units have been sold, showcasing Michelin’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
To meet the growing demand for eco-friendly products, Michelin expanded its range of energy-saving tires in 2008, offering complementary options for a wider variety of vehicle models. At that time, Michelin was the only tire manufacturer in China's passenger car and commercial vehicle markets capable of providing green and energy-efficient tire solutions.
Mr. Ke Situ, Vice President of the Passenger Car Tire Market and Sales at Michelin (China) Investment Co., Ltd., emphasized the importance of environmental protection and fuel efficiency in today’s transportation industry. He stated, “With global energy shortages and environmental concerns on the rise, it is crucial for China’s transportation sector to maintain profitability while embracing sustainability. Michelin is the only brand in the passenger and commercial vehicle market in China that offers energy-saving tires for both cars and buses.â€
Mr. Liang Shoujun, Manager of Michelin’s China Marketing Department, confirmed the performance of the XZA2+ Energy tires. According to tests conducted by the Ministry of Transport Highway Traffic Test Site, these tires demonstrated a fuel economy improvement of at least 2% compared to standard tires. With 100,000 green tires sold in two years, this translates into significant savings—24 million liters of fuel and 65,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions avoided annually, equivalent to the absorption capacity of 2.6 million trees.
Michelin’s cost-effective solution has proven to be a game-changer for fleet operators. Tires account for about 6% of total costs, but they influence up to 33% of fuel consumption. For a fleet of 100 passenger cars equipped with six XZA2+ Energy tires each, the fuel savings over a 300,000 km lifespan could reach 147,600 liters, saving approximately 915,000 yuan—nearly the cost of 300 tires.
Beijing Xianglong Alsek Co., Ltd.’s General Manager, Wang Bo, praised the low noise and energy efficiency of the XZA2+ Energy tires. The advanced carcass design also enhances retreadability, extending tire life and reducing long-term costs.
Launched in 2006, the XZA2+ Energy tire was designed for highways, luxury cars, regular passenger vehicles, and trucks. It quickly gained popularity, becoming a key player in China’s green tire market. Michelin continues to innovate, with ongoing research aimed at reducing rolling resistance by up to 20% within five years, further enhancing fuel efficiency and environmental benefits.
Features of the XZA2+ Energy include:
- Reduced rolling resistance through advanced rubber compounds, carcass design, and tread patterns.
- Increased pattern depth and optimized contact area for longer mileage and lower per-kilometer costs.
- Improved durability and retreadability for extended tire life.
- Enhanced grip, handling, and reduced noise for safer and more comfortable driving.
Michelin has long been dedicated to improving the movement of people and goods across various modes of transport, from airplanes to space shuttles. In addition to its tire manufacturing, Michelin provides travel support through ViaMichelin.com, offering guides, maps, and other resources.
Since entering the Chinese market in 1989, Michelin has established itself as a leader in quality and innovation. It opened its first joint venture in Shenyang in 1995 and later formed Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tire Co., Ltd. in 2001. Today, Michelin employs over 5,500 people in China and continues to grow and expand its presence in the region.
