How to Prepare Your Car for Summer Storms

windshield wipers on during rainstormWhile many people think summer is easier on their vehicles than winter, it actually brings its own set of challenges. From sudden downpours that reduce visibility to flash floods and hailstorms, summer weather can be just as tough on your car.

High temperatures also put extra stress on your vehicle’s systems. The cooling system works harder to keep the engine from overheating, while tires can overinflate due to expanding air. Rubber components like hoses and belts may degrade faster in the heat, making regular maintenance even more important.

To ensure your car is ready for whatever summer throws at it, take the time to check and maintain key parts before the season gets too intense. Here’s what you should focus on:

Windshield Wiper Maintenance

When it rains heavily, your windshield wipers are essential for keeping your view clear. Over time, the rubber blades can crack or wear down, and the metal arms might not move smoothly. If one wiper isn’t working, it can make driving in the rain dangerous.

Check your wipers monthly and replace them every six months, or sooner if they start streaking or skipping. Also, make sure the washer fluid reservoir is full—without it, the blades won’t effectively clean dirt or debris from your windshield.

Headlights

Your headlights are another crucial element for visibility during storms. If the bulbs are burned out or the lenses are fogged up, it can be hard to see the road ahead. Inspect your headlights regularly and have them repaired or replaced if needed.

Tires

Tires are your car’s only contact with the road, so they’re especially important during a storm. To prepare for summer conditions:

  • Check tire pressure regularly. Heat causes air to expand, increasing the risk of a blowout.
  • Look for cracks, bulges, or leaks in the tire walls. Make sure the tread depth is at least 3 mm for safe traction.
  • Switch from winter or snow tires to all-season tires if you haven’t already.

Clean the Inside Windshield

Don’t forget about the inside of your windshield. Fog and moisture can build up quickly, especially if there's a layer of dirt or grease. Clean it thoroughly at the start of the season so that your defroster can work efficiently when you need it most.

Check the Air Conditioner

Don’t wait until a storm hits to test your A/C. Start using it early to make sure it blows cold air and doesn’t make strange noises. Check for leaks and listen for unusual sounds—these could be signs of a larger issue that needs attention before the heat really sets in.

Protect the Paint

Summer weather can be harsh on your car’s paint. Tree sap, bird droppings, pollen, and UV rays can all cause damage and lead to rust. Before the season begins, wash off any winter grime, including road salt, and consider waxing your car for added protection.

Try to park in shaded areas away from trees to reduce sun exposure. If possible, keep your car in the garage during severe weather to protect it from potential damage.

Check and Replace Fluids

If you ever need to evacuate due to flooding, having enough fluids in your car can be a lifesaver. Check oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Top them off or replace them if necessary to ensure your car runs smoothly during an emergency.
