Two Chicago firefighters injured at fire scene

The Chicago Tribune recently published a report on a serious fire that broke out on the far south side of Chicago, resulting in eight injuries, including two firefighters and a police officer. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the 11600 block of South Michigan Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. A man standing on the front porch of his home initially didn’t realize what was happening when his neighbors started shouting that his house was on fire. It wasn’t until he saw flames rising from the structure that he fully understood the danger. According to Police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro, two young boys were spotted in an upstairs window, prompting officers to shout instructions for them to break the glass and jump into their arms. Neighbors nearby also joined in, guiding the boys—aged 15 and 8—to a safer side window. As the boys prepared to jump, officers and bystanders stood ready to catch them. One officer suffered a minor injury while helping to catch one of the children, but both were safely rescued. After ensuring the boys were safe, the group attempted to go upstairs to help a man who was reportedly trapped inside. However, thick smoke blocked their path. Fire crews arrived shortly after and found a police officer trying to force her way into the building to reach those still inside. Firefighters quickly responded to the situation, calling for emergency medical services and dispatching at least six ambulances to the scene. Despite the efforts, a man remained trapped on the second floor. Firefighters made a swift entry, only to be met with heavy smoke and intense heat. One firefighter was pushed back by the heat and fell down the stairs. Despite the dangerous conditions, the trapped man was eventually rescued from the rear of the second floor. He was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Four other individuals were transported to Roseland Community Hospital in good-to-fair condition. Two injured firefighters and a police officer were also taken to hospitals, but none of the injuries were life-threatening. This incident highlights the bravery and quick response of first responders and local residents who worked together to save lives during a dangerous fire. Thanks to Dan for the update.
