Glenview police and fire departments responded to a serious accident involving a garbage truck and an SUV at the intersection of Harlem Avenue and Harrison Street early this afternoon. The garbage truck, operated by the Village of Skokie, was fully loaded when it collided with the SUV, which reportedly ran into its path. As the truck, equipped with a large front plow, pushed the car along the roadway, the vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof. The truck came to rest on top of the car, and a fire broke out involving both the truck's cab and the SUV.
Three people were trapped inside the car and tragically lost their lives. The truck driver managed to escape on his own and appeared to be unharmed. Glenview Engine 6 arrived quickly and used a deck gun to spray water onto the fire before switching to a hand line to fully extinguish the flames and apply foam to prevent re-ignition.
An area resident attempted to help using a fire extinguisher but was forced back due to the intense heat. Tray Cashman, a nearby resident, captured footage of Engine 6 arriving and tackling the blaze. The video provides a powerful visual of the emergency response.
