Fire in Chicago 2-flat 8-10-13

Here's a report from Eric Haak about a fire he responded to on Saturday afternoon in Chicago's 23rd Battalion. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM at a vacant 25x40 two-flat building located on the 7200 block of South Constance. The fire was on the second floor, and it didn't take long for crews to bring it under control. However, the narrow streets and heavy tree cover made it difficult to get good shots with the fire apparatus.

The companies involved were Engine 126 and Truck 49, along with Engine 72 and Tower Ladder 34. Truck 16 and Battalion 17 were assigned as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). Despite the quick knockdown, the crews spent over an hour on scene conducting overhaul. Interestingly, Engine 126 was using an old Engine 56 as a backup unit during the response.

Eric captured several photos of the scene, showing the intensity of the fire and the efforts of the responding units. These images give a real sense of what firefighters face when dealing with such incidents in urban environments.
