On October 20th, the third science and technology conference of FAW Group opened in Changchun. This is the third science and technology conference in FAW history. The last meeting was 15 years ago.

In the past 15 years, FAW Group has transformed from a state-owned enterprise with a closed management system to a large-scale group with modern management awareness and increasingly internationalization.

After the meeting, Yan Yanfeng accepted an exclusive interview with New Car Magazine.

FAW under "Three Changes"

"New Car": Why did you choose to hold a technology conference today after 15 years?

Yan Yanfeng: In the 50 years of development history of FAW, there have been two scientific and technological conferences. Once in 1979. The conference marked the change of products and the transformation of factories. The other time was 1991. The conference determined that we must strengthen international cooperation and enter the era of cars.

Now, FAW is faced with the construction of a major "threeizations" (mega-scale, digital management, and international operation). As the focus of corporate competition and the cultivation of independent innovation ability, technology competition is more important and urgent than ever. Independent innovation has become an important task for the country, and it is also true for companies.

"New Car": What is the practical significance of independent innovation to FAW?

Yan Yanfeng: For FAW, we firmly believe in the truth that core technologies and capabilities cannot be bought. As an old state-owned enterprise, FAW can only have its own development stage and greater growth space if it insists on independent innovation. At the same time, only the ability to create independent innovation can have greater power in the cooperation. For example, we have always insisted on liberating the Red Flag brand. The confidence of these two brands in autonomy for FAW is a very big improvement. More importantly, the development of these two brands has improved the quality and level of open cooperation.

"New Car": Last year, there was a wave of thoughts in the economic circle, reflecting on reforms. In the automotive industry, there is also a widely accepted saying that we have sold the market, but we have not exchanged technology. For FAW, what is the role of joint venture and cooperation in the development of FAW, especially the autonomy aspect?

Yan Yanfeng: In the increasingly internationalized and fast-growing Chinese auto market, it is relatively fast to choose full cooperation with international companies, and it is relatively easy to solve the current contradiction of FAW. However, in the long run, starting from the interests of the country and the nation, FAW must assume the historical responsibility for the long-term development of the Chinese auto industry, and must also safeguard the fundamental interests of FAW employees. In this context, FAW adheres to the path of development of the dual track system of autonomy and cooperation.

In the past 50 years, FAW has accumulated abundant scientific and technological talents and technological strengths. This is the basis for learning from others' experiences in joint ventures and cooperation. For example, FAW successfully completed the introduction, digestion and absorption of Audi technology, and realized the transition from traditional car manufacturing to modern car production. Taking this as an opportunity, FAW has accelerated the in-depth cooperation with Volkswagen, built FAW-Volkswagen, and contributed to Audi's new round of technology upgrading and cooperation.

Since then, FAW has successively carried out joint ventures, cooperation and technical cooperation with Toyota and Mazda, which has broadened the technical field and expanded the product line.

There is accumulation of scientific and technological strength of FAW. In joint ventures and cooperation, FAW learned more technology and experience. More importantly, FAW gradually mastered the internationalized management model. Moreover, a large number of international scientific and technological talents have been trained in the process of technology introduction, digestion and absorption, and localization. These accumulations have laid a solid foundation for the development and shortening of independent brands and the international gap.

"New Car": In the past 15 years, in terms of independent innovation, what have been the achievements of FAW?

Yan Yanfeng: In the past 15 years, FAW is forming a complete innovation system.

In terms of cars, FAW has developed a series of cars ranging from high-end to economic models such as Hongqi HQ3, Pentium, and Weizhi, and it is forming a capability for self-developed cars.

On the truck side, with the launch of “Aowei” as a symbol, it has made major breakthroughs after years of independent research and development capabilities. Its structural design is in line with international standards, and advanced technologies such as fuel economy, emissions, high speed, and lightweight are widely used in products. The market adaptability has been greatly improved, further establishing the market position for the liberation of heavy trucks. The successful development of J6H high-grade tractors marks FAW's ability to independently develop international heavy trucks. Small liberation, Jiabao as the symbol of the light car is expanding the product sequence.

In addition, the commissioning of the “CA6DL” diesel engine marked the development of the Chinese internal combustion engine over 20 years. Now, it has been synchronized with the international level. More crucially, during the project, FAW not only dug gold, but also learned how to dig gold. The company has independently developed technological processes and continuous development systems for the engine.

FAW undertook the national "863" research project and achieved a major breakthrough in the technology of hybrid sedans and passenger cars. It has taken a leading position in China. The hybrid bus has entered the pilot phase of urban demonstration and is ready for industrialization.

At the same time, FAW has mastered automotive electronics product development technologies and mechanical automatic transmissions, common rail diesel engine electronic control technology, and some automotive electronics and network control technologies; it has e-navigation, vehicle mold development, three-dimensional solid design and manufacturing, and vehicle development. There are 59 key technologies involved.

New Car: Can we use the amount of funds invested and other figures to illustrate these results.

Yan Yanfeng: During the "10th Five-Year Plan" period, FAW R & D invested 7.5 billion yuan, developed 471 models, completed 810 scientific research achievements, won 25 awards above ministerial level, and obtained 372 patented technologies and 101 proprietary technologies.

"New car": independent innovation, the demand for talent is very strong. How does FAW attract senior talent?

"New Car": FAW insists that people win and win. To win by winning is to establish a long-term mechanism to motivate the growth of talents, implement the “Incentive Measures for the First Automotive Experts, and Outstanding Scientific and Technological Talents”, and train world-renowned experts and industry leaders in key areas to establish professional authority.

In terms of specific measures, in 2000, FAW launched the “Green Zone” policy and opened up new channels for the growth of talents. Through the incentive policies of laboratories, housing, and automobiles, attract talents. There is a stage for the realization of talents, a work environment, a space for development, and a guarantee of interests. At the same time, FAW is trying its best to build a talent growth platform. Through training in different ways, going abroad for training, and project experience, talents will be trained to grow from natural growth to science cultivation and scientific shaping.

Entering the Top 10 Automotive Enterprises in the World

"New Car": Next, what is the goal of FAW?

Yan Yanfeng: FAW's goal is to use a period of time of about 10 years to fully establish independent innovation capabilities supported by competitive advantages and a complete system to ensure the realization of the "three goals." FAW must become a large enterprise group with international competitiveness and lay a solid foundation for becoming one of the top 10 auto companies in the world.

The so-called full-fledged independent innovation capability supported by competitive advantage and complete system support is the integration of world advanced technology in the 50 years of experience in building a car. Commercial vehicles form the overall development capability of a full range of vehicles and assemblies with international competitiveness. A and B class cars form the overall development capacity of the vehicle and assembly; C and D class cars form the autonomous development capabilities of the entire vehicle and assembly based on the digestion and introduction technology; important parts and resources form synchronous organization and supporting capabilities; Key technologies, extensive use of automotive electronics technologies, and the industrialization of new energy vehicles and hybrid vehicles.

We estimate that by 2015, independent R&D investment will account for more than 3% of sales revenue of self-owned brands; sales of autonomous products will account for more than 60% of total sales, and self-owned brand value, independent product scale, and number of independent intellectual property rights will be the No. 1 in the industry. .

"New Car": What are the tasks that must be accomplished to achieve this goal?

Yan Yanfeng: To accomplish this goal, we must complete what we call the 10 major tasks.

FAW must carry out more improvement in the mechanism of independent innovation, and also need to reform the system of independent innovation. This is a framework.

Under this framework, FAW has specific tasks in all areas of independent innovation. First of all, we must accelerate the construction of passenger car platforms. On the level of car engines, there is a need for greater improvement. In terms of automatic transmission technology, FAW needs a big breakthrough. In terms of platform development for commercial vehicles, it is necessary to increase the cost-effectiveness and reliability of the entire vehicle and enhance the competitiveness of the product market. FAW needs to cultivate its spare parts resources strategy and improve its simultaneous development capabilities. Only in this way can there be a system of parts and components that supports the autonomy of millions. In automotive electronics research and development, FAW urgently needs to increase the technological content of its products and accelerate the electronic process of automotive products.

Energy saving and environmental protection have become the key words for the future development of the automotive industry. For FAW, the realistic solution is to increase the research and development level of hybrid power and speed up the process of industrialization of hybrid power.

From the aspect of manufacturing, FAW needs to continue to improve the level of process technology and material technology, and further improve its technology platform so as to maintain its leading position in manufacturing.

As a major player in the industry, FAW must make more efforts to lead the industry standards and strengthen the application and protection of intellectual property rights. FAW must improve basic management manuals such as product development and test verification to lay the foundation for future development and accumulate experience.

The ability of independent innovation cannot leave the application of management technology. For a system with strong independent research and development, information and digital technologies must be widely used. Only in this way can we greatly improve the level of enterprise management technology.

In a considerable period of time, FAW has to cultivate a large number of industry leaders in terms of independent innovation, create an atmosphere of technological innovation, and build a system of talents for FAW that people win. Cultivating talents is an indispensable and important task in FAW's independent innovation process.

"New Car": How much money is needed to complete these 10 tasks?

Yan Yanfeng: Supporting the completion of 10 major tasks, it is expected to invest 13 billion yuan.

"New Car": What are the shortcomings of FAW's current autonomy?

Yan Yanfeng: There are many FAW inadequacies.

In the fields of basic research, product technology, manufacturing technology, and new material development, there is still a big gap compared with international advanced companies. At the same time, there is still much work to be done in areas such as automobile safety, energy conservation and environmental protection, hybrid power industrialization, and automotive electronics.

FAW lacks excellent industry leaders and highly skilled operating technicians. In addition, FAW's technological institutional mechanisms and talent policies to meet market and development needs have yet to be further improved. All these problems are urgently resolved.
