Townhouse fire in St Charles General Alarm, 5-30-15

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two men were trapped on the second floor of a burning townhome unit Saturday night — one of whom was confined to a wheelchair — and were successfully rescued by firefighters from the St. Charles Fire Department, according to Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet, who spoke Sunday.

The emergency call came in at 11:47 p.m. for a fire at the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive in St. Charles. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy flames and smoke, with an elderly man in a wheelchair unable to escape from a bedroom. His son was seen hanging over the balcony, desperately seeking help. “Heavy smoke was pushing over him from the sliding glass doors — the father was still inside,” Schelstreet explained.

Firefighters quickly deployed a portable ladder to rescue the two men. A firefighter climbed onto the balcony and carried the father down the ladder, while another helped the son out of the unit. The operation was swift and efficient, showcasing the skill and coordination of the responding teams.

In addition to St. Charles firefighters, assistance was provided by units from Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, and South Elgin.

This account comes from John Tulipano:

At approximately 23:45 on May 30th, 2015, St. Charles Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire at 1742 Cumberland Green, with reports of people trapped inside. The first arriving engine, Engine 102, found heavy fire coming from the second floor of a 10-unit, two-story frame building (a condo/apartment complex), with a person hanging from the balcony.

Engine 102 managed to rescue one individual from the second-floor balcony and discovered a second person in a wheelchair in a first-floor bedroom. The crews worked swiftly to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units. When I arrived, the fire was already well contained. One civilian was transported to the hospital, while another received treatment on-site.
