The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was known for his larger-than-life personality, so it’s no surprise that the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic, a tribute to the fallen firefighter, reflects just that. This year’s event is set to be one of the largest golf outings in the area, with over 1,000 players expected to take part across ten courses. Last year, the event attracted 380 participants and covered three courses, but this year’s scale is already making waves.

"It's supposed to be one of the biggest golf events ever," said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. "This is the third year, and it's never been this big before."

The tournament kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the games are done, a casual picnic-style reception featuring grilled steaks will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park.

Captain Johnson passed away while battling an extra-alarm house fire on November 2, 2012, in Gage Park. In his memory, a golf outing was organized shortly after his death. Since its launch, the event has raised over $30,000, with all proceeds going to support struggling firefighters across Chicago—often without much recognition. A portion of the funds also supports a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, the organizers have partnered with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie had played a key role in planning that event and built many lasting connections along the way.

So far, more than 100 golfers have registered for the event. The cost to join the full day is $125, which includes the golf and the after-party. Some of the top-tier courses may require an additional fee. For those who just want to enjoy the reception at 115 Bourbon Street, the cost is $50.
