The Herbie Johnson Golf Classic

Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert T. Johnson was more than just a firefighter—he was a legend in the community, known for his bold personality and unwavering dedication. That’s why the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic, now in its third year, is shaping up to be one of the largest charity golf events in the city. This year’s event will span 10 courses across the Chicago area, with over 1,000 players expected to join in honor of the fallen hero.

“It’s supposed to be one of the biggest golf outings ever held,” said Ted Johnson, Herbie’s brother. “We started small, but this year it’s really taking off.”

The tournament kicks off with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on June 29. After the games are done, all participants will be invited to a picnic-style reception from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W. 115th St. in south suburban Merrionette Park. The event will feature grilled steaks, live music, and a chance to remember a true hero.

Captain Johnson passed away while battling an intense house fire in Gage Park on November 2, 2012. In the months that followed, friends and family came together to create the Herbie Johnson Golf Classic as a way to keep his memory alive. Since its launch, the event has raised over $30,000, with proceeds going toward helping struggling firefighters and funding a scholarship at St. Rita High School in Ashburn.

This year, organizers have partnered with the FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Herbie had been involved in planning that event and made lasting connections along the way. The collaboration adds another layer of meaning to this year’s gathering.

So far, more than 100 golfers have registered for the event. The cost to participate in both the golf and the after-party is $125, with some top-tier courses charging an extra fee. For those who just want to enjoy the celebration at 115 Bourbon Street, tickets are available for $50.
