The separation occurs inside a rotating bowl. The feed enters through a stationary inlet pipe, accelerates in a distributor, and then moves into the disc stack. The oil phase is separated and discharged through the center, while the water and solids move to the periphery. A paring disc pump removes the water, and solids are discharged intermittently via a hydraulic system.
