Steve Redick recently visited Wirfs Industries in McHenry with a group of friends and captured some intriguing fire apparatus that were in for maintenance. Among the units on display, two stood out: one from South Elgin & Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) and another from Clarendon Hills Fire Department Squad 316.
The South Elgin & Countryside FPD received a 100-foot mid-mount tower ladder in 2009. This unit was built by Crimson on a Spartan chassis, featuring a Gladiator Classic cab. The combination of the Spartan chassis and Crimson's tower made it a unique piece of equipment that caught the attention of Steve and his friends.
A series of photos were taken, showcasing the unit in detail. One image highlights the 2009 Spartan Gladiator Classic/Crimson 100′ mid-mount tower ladder, while another focuses on the Crimson law tag, providing a closer look at the manufacturer’s branding. A third photo displays the Spartan chassis law tag, offering more insight into the unit’s origins.
Meanwhile, Clarendon Hills FD Squad 316 took a different approach with its 1994 Pierce Dash ER HDR. Unlike traditional designs, this unit features a short wheelbase and a stubby ER-style cab, making it well-suited for urban environments where maneuverability is key. The compact design allows for quick response times and better access to tight spaces.
Steve snapped several shots of the Clarendon Hills unit, including a close-up of the Pierce Manufacturing law tag, which helps identify the original manufacturer. These images provide a glimpse into the history and evolution of fire apparatus across different departments.
Overall, the visit offered a fascinating look at the diversity of fire trucks in service today, each tailored to meet the specific needs of the communities they protect.
