Dispute arises between the Barrington FD and the Barrington Countryside FPD

The Daily Herald has another report on the ongoing division between the Village of Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. As planned, the two agencies officially went their separate ways on New Year’s Day—but not without some last-minute confusion. At midnight, 19 firefighters who had been employed by the village were laid off, but they weren’t allowed to take their personal protective gear with them. This left the fire district scrambling to find alternatives, forcing them to borrow equipment from the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District just days before the split. They’ve since started looking into leasing gear for the months ahead. According to Jeff Lawler, the village manager, the issue stemmed from the fact that the fired firefighters were hired through a third-party contractor, Paramedic Services of Illinois. “It's taxpayer-owned equipment, and we can’t just hand it over without proper legal procedures,” he explained. He mentioned that the matter was discussed with fire district officials in early December, and he’s unsure how it wasn’t resolved. However, Tom Rowan, president of the Barrington Countryside board, claims that the conversation Lawler referenced seems to be one the fire district doesn’t remember. Under their long-standing agreement, the village and fire district shared all equipment, which was meant to be divided evenly when the partnership ended—just like the vehicles. Jeff Swanson, chief of the Barrington Countryside Fire Department, said while rules should be followed, they shouldn’t compromise safety. “The separation of gear could have been handled over time, but the firefighters needed the equipment right away on New Year’s Day,” he said. Currently, the fire district employs 34 firefighters through Paramedic Services of Illinois. Only the 19 who were laid off from the village department were affected by the gear dispute. The specially fitted gear for these employees is expected to arrive in the spring, so they’re using leased equipment in the meantime. Despite the challenges, both agencies have reported that they've continued to fulfill all their operational duties since the split. The Barrington Fire Department now only covers the village’s five square miles, whereas before it also served the surrounding district. Rowan noted that morale among the new staff is high. In fact, the crew even cleaned all their newly received equipment shortly after midnight on Wednesday. Barrington Countryside serves parts of Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, South Barrington, Inverness, and unincorporated areas of Cook, Lake, and McHenry counties. On a related note, here’s what we know about the apparatus division: **Village of Barrington Fire Department:** - One engine - The quint - The battalion buggy - Two ambulances **Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District:** - Two engines - The squad - The tanker (plus a newly acquired one) - Two ambulances At this time, it remains unclear who owns the brush unit.
